Kate was a laundry girl and grew very tired of the ironing-board. She aspired to greater things, and when she saw an advertisement in the newspaper of a school at which one might become a famous detective in a few short, inexpensive lessons, with a guarantee of being provided with mysteries and criminals enough to keep one busy, she jumped at it.
